Servant lifestyle

Servant lifestyle

I’m rather used to having a dishwasher in the house that I’m living in. As far back as my memory goes, I’ve lived in one house, and that only for seven months when I was around nine, that didn’t have a dishwasher. Needless to say, this is one piece of equipment that I am very accustomed to. This is my (weak) excuse for why I don’t wash the dishes my share of the time.

My housemate washes the dishes more than I do. I realized this the other week, and am trying to rectify it. But I also realized that he consistently does so without any complaint; I’ve never had him bring it up with me. He just washes the dishes.

When I realized that I also thought, “That is an example of a Christ-like servant lifestyle.” So that leaves me with two things to work on – becoming more of a Christ-like servant in my life, and washing the dishes more frequently.

Here’s another example of this same housemate emulating a servant lifestyle. He cooks meals for the two of us far more often than I do. This isn’t a shortcoming on my part. I will throw together food when I am hungry and when I’m assigned to cook I enjoy making a meal. He goes out of his way to cook meals when he doesn’t need to.

There have been many times when he’ll come up to my room. “I’m making pasta. Do you want some?” Substitute whatever food he’s cooking at the time for ‘pasta’. This is a blessing to me, and something that I can strive for. To look at my life and say, “How can I expand what I’m doing so that it will bless others? Or how can I start something specifically to be a servant to those around me?

Community at School of Discipleship

We often hear from graduates about how the community aspect of School of Discipleship impacted them. During their year, students have opportunities to hang out with staff over dinner, lunches and coffee dates. They love getting to know the staff and hear how God has worked in their lives.

One student said: “I was blown away with how open people were about their lives and how God saved them. … it was incredible hearing how many people here went through or struggled with similar things and how God helped them overcome. Knowing how God carried them through and seeing the godliness in their lives, it encouraged me that God will carry me through my problems and bring [me] out better in the end.”

As staff, we are thankful the Lord has brought young people here to invest our lives in and point to Christ.

I encourage you to start/finish your application.

School of Discipleship is a Foundational Year

Whether you go on to serve in ministry, attend college or get a job, School of Discipleship prepares you to be a disciple of Christ wherever He leads you.

Laura, a School of Discipleship alumna, said: “I entered the School of Discipleship unsure of what direction to take in life. Working in GFA’s office with the Web Department, I was able to experience a field of work I wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Now that I have graduated [from School of Discipleship], I am pursuing a degree in Strategic Communications: Social Media Management, something I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing before I went to SD.”

21st Century Lens

It has been a few months now since I’ve returned to the Discipleship Program for my second year and what a year it’s been already!

We are currently studying the history of the church. I know, I was thinking the same thing… Why study church history? I asked our GFA director this question and he mentioned that it is important to know the history of the church because it’s my testimony, and as a believer it’s my history. Though I accepted the answer, I still didn’t quite understand until we actually started going through our classes. I am also reading “Destined for the Throne” by Paul Billheimer; it has also really helped me to understand why church history is so important. Jesus is coming back for the church, His bride, that’s all believers of the past, present and future generations. What the early church believed and did impacts what I believe and do today, the early church also looked back to what the Israelites believed and had them as a role model.

As I am reading through the Old Testament (my goal is to finish reading through the Bible by the end of the year)  with this new thought of the church having existed since the beginning  of time it has helped me to understand the Holiness of God and His great mercy and amazing love towards us. All throughout history God has been building up His church and preparing it to reign with Him in Heaven.

As I read Deuteronomy, there are so many verses where God only asks the Israelites to obey Him and He promises that when they do He will bless them. The word “obedience” is not a pleasant thought, it makes me feel like I’m going to be bound and never able to do what I want. Deuteronomy 11:22 (NLT Version) says; “Be careful to obey all these commands I am giving you. Show love to the Lord your God by walking in His ways and holding tightly to Him.” Reading this verse helped me put the word obedience into a whole new perspective! Now when I obey the Lord I know that He knows how much I love Him. My obedience is proof of my love and yet I find myself more often than not disobeying just as the Israelites seemed to do.

Reading about the Israelites journey and how God had to deal with their sin makes me so grateful for His great mercy! If he would still deal with us and our sin the way He did with the Israelites’ sin I would have been condemned to death a long time ago!! What a merciful and compassionate God we serve, who so willingly forgives us when we ask and who with patience continues to lead us to our everlasting Home!!
